Neil Simon’s classic Broadway play, The Sunshine Boys, is being brought to the West End for a limited 12 week run starting in the spring, starring Danny DeVito and Richard Griffiths.

Previewing from the 27th April, the run will go on until the 28th July at the Savoy Theatre. It is directed by Thea Sharrock.

The Sunshine Boys starring Danny DeVito coming to the West End

Erstwhile colleagues, Willie Clark (Danny DeVito) and Al Lewis (Richard Griffiths) aka The Sunshine Boys haven’t spoken to each other in years since their act was broken up by Lewis who wanted to get out of showbusiness to the bitter chagrin of Clark. When CBS call for the vaudevillian greats to be re-united for a nostalgia show, past grudges resurface as they take centre stage once more.

I am very excited about the pairing of Danny DeVito (in his West End debut) and Richard Griffiths (perhaps best known as Harry Potter’s Uncle Vernon). Both actors are highly regarded and their performances will be absolutely fantastic and they have shown they can crankily excoriate strips from people in past performances. The Sunshine Boys always hinges on the quality of the two leads and I cannot think of two more talented and experienced method-style actors to play the roles. The director, Thea Sharrock, has also directed some excellent plays recently, most notably After the Dance and Equus.

Neil Simon’s 1975 film adaptation of the play won an Oscar and was nominated for three others.
