ALBUM: Asobi Seksu – Citrus

At a time when you can’t move for mediocre dirge, the re-release of Asobi Seksu’s startling Citrus on the One Little Indian label is going to be a welcome breath of fresh air to those of you that missed it the first time around.

Combining lush, dream-like rockscapes with the light and distinctive lead vocals of Yuki Chikudate, this is an album that is as equally at home on a hot summer’s day as it is with the lights down. The whole album is awash in a soft neon glow propagated by Chikudate’s voice which lets the darker, subtle musical accompaniment drift off into the background. Current single Thursday borders on ambient prog-rock with a sweeping melody that also manages to feel intensely personal.

This is the sound of romance at the end of the world.
