ALBUM: The Neutrinos – One Way Kiss

There’s a huge dearth of female-fronted rock bands around at the moment and I had high hopes that the gap might be plugged by this band, and they very nearly pull it off.

The opening track. Kiss Like Killers, shows off spiky guitars and loads of energy.  And stand-out track Girlfriend’s Got a Gun is stripped-down and uncomplicated, a bit like a mellower Gossip.

Less convincing are the lyrics for songs like Horsepills and Eat My Hole. The latter especially comes across like rock’s answer to a naughty toddler repeatedly yelling poo cos they’ve recently discovered that it’s a bit of a rude word.

Much more successful is the twisted darkness of Corpse. This track also shows off Karen Reilly’s vocals to much better effect as on other tracks it feels a bit like she’s really fighting to be heard.

I’m not sure that these songs are particularly chart-friendly but there’s a real need for more balls-out girls leading a vocal charge and I’ll definitely be listening again.     Julia Collins
