Among the dozens of animated TV series to emerge since the success of The Simpsons and South Park opened the floodgates for adult comedy animation, the Aqua Teen Hunger Force must surely be the most bizarre – the protagonists are a packet of French fries, a milkshake and a meatball!
The series never held much appeal, however curiosity was piqued by the emergence of this film. Most animated films stand alone and this feature spin-off does not rely too heavily on knowledge of the series’ narrative and characterisation – it’s a total headfuck whether you’ve ever seen the show or not!
Of interest mainly to it’s cult fanbase it’s an amusing curiosity for newcomers who discover it. Like The Spongebob Squarepants Movie this is surely the product of a mind altered by narcotics. The same kind of illegal substances which doubtless make this a hilariously enjoyable experience. But if you’re open to some creative and anarchic saturday morning cartoon subversion this 80 minute movie is entertaining enough for sober minds.
The loose storyline follows the slacker heroes (they’re not aqautic or teenagers by the way) as they attempt to unravel the mystery of the Insanoflex exercise machine; a device that could spell the end of the world. Or something. There are time traveling robots, a mad scientist and a piece of watermelon who may just hold all the answers. To call this film scatalogical would be an understatement.
